47 – (In another hadith: “No one kills a sparrow or anything larger without due right but that Allah will question him about it on the Day of Resurrection!” It was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what right is due to it?” He replied, “That one slaughter it and eat it, rather than cut off its head and throw it away.” Recorded by al-Nasāʾī and al-Hākim; the latter said, “Its chain is authentic.”) p. 64
Weak. In the cited version, however, it is narrated by Suhayb, the client of Ibn ʿĀmir, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, traced back to the Prophet. This Suhayb is unknown, as explained under the preceding hadith.
48 – (In the two Sahihs: “When you release your dog, invoke Allah’s name over it. If it catches the quarry for you and you reach it alive, slaughter it.”) p. 65
Authentic. Al-Bukhārī (4/7), Muslim (6/58)—whose wording this is—al-Nasāʾī (2/197), and Ahmad (4/379) recorded it in the hadith of ʿAdī ibn Hātim, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me—and he then cited it, adding:
“If you find that your dog has killed the quarry without eating from it, then eat it. If you find another dog with yours and the quarry has been killed, do not eat it, for you do not know which dog killed it. When you shoot your arrow, invoke Allah’s name. If the quarry remains out of sight for a day and you find no mark on it except that of your arrow, you may eat it if you wish. But if you find it drowned in water, do not eat it.”
49 – (ʿAdī ibn Hātim asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying, “I shoot game with a miʿrād (hunting shaft), and I hit it!” He replied, “If you shoot with the miʿrād and it pierces—that is, penetrates the body—then eat it; but if it strikes with its broad side, do not eat it.” The hadith is recorded by both al-Bukhārī and Muslim.) p. 66
Authentic. It was also recorded by the authors of the Sunan collections, except Ibn Mājah, as well as by others. It is documented in Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl (2540).
