46 — (The hadith states: “Whoever kills a sparrow wantonly, it will cry out to Allah on the Day of Resurrection, saying: ‘My Lord, so-and-so killed me wantonly and did not kill me for any useful purpose.’” Narrated by al-Nasā’ī and Ibn Hibbān in his Sahīh.) p. 64
Weak. It was recorded by al-Nasā’ī (210/2), Ibn Hibbān (1071—Mawārid), Ahmad (389/4), and al-Baghawī in The Recension of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAwn al-Harāz (fol. 236/2), through ʿĀmir al-Ahwal, from Sālih ibn Dīnār, from ʿAmr ibn al-Sharīd, who said: “I heard al-Sharīd say: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say...’” and he mentioned the hadith.
I say: Its chain is weak and has two defects:
The first is Sālih ibn Dīnār. He was al-Juʿfī, though he is also said to have been al-Hilālī. Only ʿĀmir al-Ahwal narrated from him, as stated in al-Mīzān. This means that he is an unknown narrator. Al-Hāfiz said in al-Taqrīb: “Acceptable”—meaning when corroborated; otherwise, his hadith is weak, as he expressly stated in the introduction.
The second is ʿĀmir al-Ahwal, namely Ibn ʿAbd al-Wāhid. Al-Hāfiz said in al-Taqrīb: “Truthful, but he makes mistakes.” He is therefore weak because of his poor memory. Moreover, he was contradicted in its chain by the trustworthy imam and hadith master Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, who said: “ʿAmr ibn Dīnār narrated to us, saying: ‘Suhayb, the client of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿĀmir, informed me, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr,’” with a similar report traced back to the Prophet. This is the hadith that follows it in the book.
It was recorded by al-Nasā’ī (201/2, 210), al-Dārimī (84/2), al-Hākim (233/4), al-Humaydī in his Musnad (fols. 124–125), and al-Baghawī in Sharh al-Sunnah (1/180/3), through several routes from Sufyān with this chain. Al-Humaydī added:
“Sufyān was asked: ‘Hammād ibn Zayd narrates it as follows: ʿAmr informed me, from Suhayb
