It was narrated by Mālik and al-Shāfiʿī. The reported continuation of this hadith—“but without marrying their women or eating their slaughtered animals”—has not been authenticated by hadith scholars.) p. 62
Weak. In Mālik’s narration—and al-Shāfiʿī’s narration from him—it comes through Ja‘far ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Alī, from his father, who reported: “When ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb mentioned the Magians, he said, ‘I do not know how to deal with them.’ ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn ‘Awf then said, ‘I testify that I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say...’” and he cited the hadith. Al-Hāfiz Ibn ‘Asākir said: “This chain is disconnected; Muhammad did not meet ‘Umar.” Al-Hāfiz Ibn Kathīr therefore declared it weak, as I mentioned in Irwā’ al-Ghalīl (1248). The following hadith renders it unnecessary.
44 — (The hadith stating that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, accepted the jizyah from the Magians of Hajar. This was narrated by al-Bukhārī and others.) p. 62
Authentic. It is the hadith of Bajālah ibn ‘Abadah, who said:
“‘Umar had not collected the jizyah from the Magians until ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn ‘Awf testified that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had collected it from the Magians of Hajar.”
It was recorded by al-Bukhārī, Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasā’ī in al-Sunan al-Kubrā (fol. 54/1), and al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good, authentic hadith.” It also has corroborating reports that I cited in my documentation of the hadith in al-Irwā’ (1249).
45 — (Some people asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: “There are people who bring us meat, and we do not know whether they mentioned Allah’s name over it.” He replied: “Mention Allah’s name over it yourselves and eat.”) p. 63
Authentic. It was recorded by al-Bukhārī and others, and was cited seven hadiths earlier.
