they be kept out of the animals’ sight. He also said: “When one of you slaughters an animal, let him finish it off”—that is, let him complete the slaughter. Narrated by Ibn Mājah.) p. 57
Weak. Ibn Mājah (3172) narrated it by way of Ibn Lahī‘ah: Qurrah ibn Haywīl related to me, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim ibn ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar, from his father, ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar.
This chain is weak. Its flaw is Ibn Lahī‘ah—whose given name was ‘Abd Allāh—for he was weak and had a poor memory. Moreover, he was inconsistent in its chain of transmission: on one occasion he narrated it as above; on another, he said: from ‘Uqayl, from Ibn Shihāb, with the same report. Ahmad narrated it (2/108). On yet another occasion, he said: from Yazīd ibn Abī Habīb, from Sālim, with the same report. Ibn Mājah also narrated it.
40 — (Ibn ‘Abbās reported that a man laid a sheep down while sharpening his blade. The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Do you intend to make it die several deaths? Why did you not sharpen your blade before laying it down?” Narrated by al-Hākim, who said: “Authentic according to al-Bukhārī’s criteria.”) p. 57
Authentic. It is documented in Silsilat al-Ahādīth al-Sahīhah, no. (24).
40/1 — (See its documentation in al-Mustadrak, p. 288.)
41 — (He said: “Whatever is cut from an animal while it is alive is carrion.” Narrated by Ahmad, Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and al-Hākim.) p. 58
Sound. It was narrated by Ahmad (5/218), Abū Dāwūd (2858), al-Tirmidhī (1/280), as well as al-Dārimī (2/93), al-Dāraqutnī (548), al-Hākim (4/239), and al-Bayhaqī (1/23, 9/245), by way of ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn ‘Abd Allāh ibn Dīnār, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from ‘Atā’ ibn Yasār, from Abū Wāqid al-Laythī—may Allah be pleased with him—who said:
