THE AUTHOR’S PREFACE

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, seek His help and forgiveness, and seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our souls and our wicked deeds. Whomever Allah guides, none can lead astray; and whomever He leaves astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

To proceed: This is a critical study I prepared of the hadiths in the eminent Sheikh Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s book, The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam. I traced and assessed its hadiths according to scholarly methods, establishing the grade of each one—whether sound or weak—as required by the principles of hadith scholarship, the biographical records of its narrators, and the explicit judgments of its leading authorities. My purpose was to ensure that anyone consulting the book would be fully informed of the status of its hadiths, especially since most of them concern legal rulings, as is readily apparent.

Although some people are lenient and hold that weak hadiths may be acted upon regarding meritorious deeds—a view that I consider outweighed, in agreement with many of the foremost authorities I follow—no one, praise be to Allah, maintains that weak hadiths may be cited as evidence for Islamic legal rulings. Rather, they unanimously agree that such evidence must belong to the accepted category, whose lowest grade is a report deemed acceptable through corroboration.

Great numbers of authors, past and present, have neglected this obligation, as I have explained to some extent in the introduction to my book The Series of Weak Hadiths and elsewhere. Thus, one finds them citing as evidence hadiths that are not established, and sometimes even reports for which no basis can be found! Nor may anyone excuse them on the grounds that they are simply ignorant of which hadiths are sound and which are weak, for ignorance has never been regarded by scholars as an excuse—especially since they are the very ones who
