Muslim narrated it without citing its wording; Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāī—whose wording is cited here—and others also narrated it from Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him). It is documented in al-Irwā (825).
466 — (He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The best charity is that which leaves one self-sufficient.” Al-Tabarānī narrated it with a good chain, and something similar appears in al-Sahīh.) p. 325
Authentic. Ahmad (3/434) narrated it: Yahyā ibn Saīd narrated to us, saying: Amr ibn Uthmān narrated to us, saying: I heard Mūsā ibn Talha relate that Hakīm ibn Hizām told him that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The best charity—or the most excellent charity—is that which leaves one self-sufficient. The upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin with those whom you support.” I say: This is an authentic chain that meets the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Muslim and others also narrated it through Mūsā ibn Talha with the wording: “The most excellent charity is that which is given after one’s needs have been met…” and the rest of the hadith. Al-Bukhārī and others narrated it through another route from Hakīm with the same account. It is documented in al-Irwā (833).
467 — (Jābir ibn Abd Allāh reported: While we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), a man came to him with a piece of gold the size of an egg and said, “O Messenger of Allah, take this as charity, for by Allah, I possess nothing else.” He turned away from him in anger. He then took it from him and hurled it at him so forcefully that, had it struck him, it would have hurt him. He then said: “One of you comes to me with all his wealth, possessing nothing else, and afterward sits begging from people! Charity is only to be given after one’s needs have been met. Take it; we have no need of it.” Abū Dāwūd and al-Hākim.) p. 325.
Weak. Its chain contains Ibn Ishāq’s use of the ambiguous “from” formula. It is documented in al-Irwā (898).
468 — (It is reported of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) “that he would reserve a year’s provisions for his family.” Al-Bukhārī.) p. 325.
