Authentic. Ahmad narrated it (4/197): Abd al-Rahmān narrated to us: Mūsā ibn Ulayy narrated to us, from his father, who said: I heard Amr ibn al-Ās say:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for me and said, ‘Put on your clothes, take up your arms, and come to me.’ I came to him while he was performing ablution. He looked me over from head to foot, then lowered his head and said, ‘I intend to place you in command of an army. Allah will keep you safe and grant you spoils, and I wish you to receive a goodly share of wealth.’ I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I did not embrace Islam for the sake of wealth. Rather, I embraced Islam out of a desire for Islam and to be with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).’ He said, ‘O Amr, excellent indeed....’”
Ahmad (4/202), Abū Yalā in his Musnad (q 2/348), al-Hākim (2/2), al-Baghawī in Sharh al-Sunnah (3/88/1), al-Qudāī in Musnad al-Shihāb (q 2/107), and Ibn Asākir in Tārīkh Dimashq (13/253/2) then narrated it through other routes from Mūsā ibn Ulayy, with the wording: “How excellent is wealth. . . .” Al-Hākim said, “Authentic according to Muslim’s criteria,” and al-Dhahabī concurred. It is as they stated. Ibn Hibbān (1089) also narrated it through this chain in an abridged form, using the first wording.
