As for al-Tabarānī, he narrated it from al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr, who said: “We were traveling with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)....” He then related the hadith in terms similar to al-Aʿmash’s narration. Al-Mundhirī said (3/290): “Its narrators are trustworthy.”
(Note) The word habl (“rope”), beginning with hā’, is how it appears in al-Targhīb, and likewise in Sunan Abī Dāwūd. In al-Musnad, however, it appears as nabl (“arrows”), beginning with nūn. In my view, the latter is correct, as the context supports it. It is further corroborated by the narrations of al-Tahāwī and al-Tabarānī, both of which have kinānah (“quiver”) instead of nabl.
This hadith has supporting evidence in a report from Zayd ibn Thābit to similar effect.
Al-Hākim (3/421) narrated it through Muhammad ibn ʿUmar, with his chain from Zayd.
This Muhammad is al-Wāqidī, and he is a rejected narrator.
The wording cited in the heading has another supporting report from Abū Hurayrah, traced back to the Prophet with the same wording.
Ibn al-Mubārak (688) narrated it through Yahyā ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, who said: I heard my father say: I heard Abū Hurayrah say—and he then mentioned it.
448—(The hadith states: “Let none of you be present where a man is wrongfully killed, for the curse descends upon those who were present and did not defend him.” Al-Tabarānī and al-Bayhaqī, with a good chain of transmission.) p. 316.
Weak. Al-Tabarānī narrated it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (3/131/1), as did al-ʿUqaylī in al-Duʿafā’ (p. 6) and Abū Nuʿaym in al-Hilyah (3/345), through several routes from Mandal ibn ʿAlī, from Asad ibn ʿAtā’, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said it. His version, however, reads: “...when they did not defend him; and let no one
