Note: The compiler also attributed this hadith to Muslim, following al-Mundhirī as is his custom. I can only regard this as an error, for several reasons support my conclusion. First, al-Nābulusī did not attribute it to Muslim in al-Dhakhāʾir (2/167, 174). Second, those who indexed Muslim’s hadiths by their wording and opening phrases did not indicate that Muslim narrated this hadith; these include Muhammad Fuʾād ʿAbd al-Bāqī and the compilers of the concordance of hadith wordings. Third, al-Suyūtī did not attribute it to Muslim in al-Jāmiʿ al-Saghīr. Al-Munāwī even took him to task, saying: “The compiler’s method implies that the hadith he cited is in neither of the two Sahihs, whereas the contrary is true: it is in Muslim, as al-Mundhirī and others reported from him.” The weakness of this objection is evident from the preceding explanation. Praise be to Allah for granting success.
440—(And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said): “A believer continues to have latitude in his religion so long as he does not shed blood unlawfully.” Al-Bukhārī (p. 315).
Sound. Al-Bukhārī (1/314) and Ahmad (2/94) narrated it from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said—and he then quoted it. Al-Hākim mistakenly cited it as an omission by al-Bukhārī (4/350).
441—(And he said: “Allah may forgive every sin except that of a man who dies associating partners with Him, or that of a man who deliberately kills a believer.” Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Hibbān, and al-Hākim). p. 315
Sound. Abū Dāwūd (4270), Ibn Hibbān (51), and al-Hākim (4/351) narrated it through Khālid ibn Dahqān, who said: ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Zakariyyā narrated to us, saying: I heard Umm al-Dardāʾ say: I heard Abū al-Dardāʾ say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say—and he then quoted it. Al-Hākim said: “Its chain is sound,” and al-Dhahabī concurred. It is indeed as he said, for all its narrators are trustworthy. As for al-Hāfiz’s description of Ibn Dahqān as “acceptable,” it is not
