(2/86, 141), by way of Saīd ibn Jubayr, who said: “Ibn Umar passed by some young men of Quraysh who had set up a bird as a target and were shooting at it. They had assigned to the bird’s owner every arrow of theirs that missed. When they saw Ibn Umar, they dispersed. Ibn Umar said, ‘Who did this?! May Allah curse whoever did this! The Messenger of Allah cursed…’”—to the end of the hadith. This is Muslim’s wording.
As for al-Bukhārī, he narrated it (4/14–15) with similar wording, but without its final sentence, which the author attributed to both al-Bukhārī and Muslim! One narration of al-Bukhārī states: “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed anyone who mutilated an animal.”
The hadith has a corroborating report from Abdullah ibn Abbas, stating that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do not use any living creature as a target.” It was narrated by Muslim and al-Nasāī, as well as by al-Tirmidhī (1/279), Ibn Mājah (3187), and Ahmad (1/216, 273, 274, 280, 285, 297, 340, 345), through two routes from him.
383 — (The hadith: “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited pitting animals against one another.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī.) p. 286
Weak. It was narrated by Abū Dāwūd (2562), al-Tirmidhī (1/319), and also Ibn Adī in al-Kāmil (q. 1/152), from Qutbah ibn Abd al-Azīz, from al-Amash, from Abū Yahyā, from Mujāhid, from Ibn Abbas, traced back to the Prophet. Al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Adī then narrated it by way of Sharīk, from al-Amash, from Mujāhid, from Ibn Abbas. Ibn Adī said:
“No one other than Qutbah related it from al-Amash, from Abū Yahyā, from Mujāhid.”
I say: He is trustworthy and one of Muslim’s narrators. Sharīk ibn Abdullah, the judge, differed from him by omitting Abū Yahyā al-Qattāt from the chain. Sharīk, however, is weak. Sufyān differed from both of them, reporting it from al-Amash, from Abū Yahyā, from Mujāhid, with the Companion omitted; he did not mention Ibn Abbas.
Al-Tirmidhī narrated it and said:
“It is said that this is sounder than Qutbah’s hadith.”
