“A good, authentic hadith.” It also has a corroborating report in al-Tirmidhī (2/85), as well as in Ahmad (2/304–305, 305), from Abū Hurayrah with similar wording, adding at the end:
“If you did not sin, Allah would bring forth a new creation who would sin, and He would forgive them.” Al-Tirmidhī said: “Its chain of transmission is not particularly strong.”
I say: It is nevertheless acceptable as corroboration. This addition also appears in Muslim shortly before this hadith, through another chain from Abū Hurayrah, with the wording: “…a people who sin and then seek Allah’s forgiveness, and He forgives them.”
374 — (He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and grief.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd.) p. 282.
Authentic. Abū Dāwūd narrated it from Abū Saīd al-Khudrī with a weak chain of transmission. However, al-Bukhārī and others narrated it from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say…” He then cited it and added: “…and from laziness, cowardice, miserliness, the burden of debt, and being overpowered by others.” It should therefore have been attributed to al-Bukhārī. It appeared previously under no. (347).
375 — (Among the reports concerning his humor is that an elderly woman came to him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah that He admit me into Paradise.” He replied, “O mother of so-and-so, no elderly woman will enter Paradise.” The woman became distressed and wept, thinking that she would not enter Paradise. When he saw her reaction, he explained what he meant: an elderly woman would not enter Paradise while elderly; rather, Allah would create her anew, and she would enter it as a young virgin. He then recited to her the words of Allah Most High:
“Indeed, We have created them anew, making them virgins, loving and equal in age.”
Surah al-Wāqiah: 35–37, p. 283.)
Good. It was narrated by Abd ibn Humayd, al-Tirmidhī in al-Shamā’il, Ibn al-Mundhir, and al-Bayhaqī
