347 — (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allah from debt and say: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men.” Abū Dāwūd.) p. 258
Weak. This wording is not found in Abū Dāwūd or elsewhere as a supplication with which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself sought refuge. Rather, it is a report of something he (peace and blessings be upon him) taught someone else, and it is not established. Abū Dāwūd (1555) narrated it through Ghassān ibn ʿAwf: al-Jurayrī informed us, from Abū Nadrah, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said:
“One day, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the mosque and found a man of the Ansār there called Abū Umāmah. He said, ‘Abū Umāmah, why do I see you sitting in the mosque outside the time of prayer?’ He replied, ‘Worries and debts have beset me, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘Shall I not teach you words which, if you say them, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will dispel your worries and settle your debt?’ He said, ‘I replied: Indeed, O Messenger of Allah!’ He said, ‘Say in the morning and evening: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and grief; I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness; I seek refuge in You from cowardice and miserliness; and I seek refuge in You from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men.’”
I say: This chain is weak. Al-Hāfiz Ibn Hajar said of Ghassān ibn ʿAwf in al-Taqrīb: “Somewhat weak in hadith.”
What is authentically established of the Prophet’s own supplication (peace and blessings be upon him) is what al-Bukhārī (4/198) and others narrated from Anas, who said: I often heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and grief, incapacity and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debt, and being overpowered by men.”
348 — (He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I seek refuge with Allah from disbelief and debt.” A man asked, “Do you equate disbelief with debt, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Yes.” Al-Nasāʾī and al-Hākim.)
