Messenger of Allah, this is how we support him when he is wronged; but how do we support him when he is an oppressor?” He replied: “You restrain him from wrongdoing; that is how you support him.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī.) p. 238
Authentic. It is documented in Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl.
307 — (Al-Bukhārī narrated that Abū Dharr and Bilāl the Abyssinian—may Allah be pleased with them both—became angry with one another and exchanged insults. In a fit of anger, Abū Dharr said to Bilāl, “You son of a black woman!” Bilāl complained about him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said to Abū Dharr: “Did you insult him on account of his mother? You are a man in whom there is a trait of the Age of Ignorance.”) p. 238.
Authentic, but not in this form. It was narrated by al-Bukhārī (1/16, 2/124), as well as Muslim (5/92–93) and Ahmad (5/161), from al-Maʿrūr ibn Suwayd, who said:
“I saw Abū Dharr al-Ghifārī wearing a set of garments, while his servant was wearing a similar set. We asked him about this, and he replied: ‘I once exchanged insults with a man, and he complained about me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet said to me: “Did you insult him on account of his mother?…”’” In the first passage, he added: “You are a man in whom there is a trait of the Age of Ignorance.” This is al-Bukhārī’s wording. As you can see, it neither mentions Bilāl nor contains the words, “You son of a black woman!” The compiler took that from Fath al-Bārī (1/80–81) by al-Hāfiz, who did not attribute it to al-Bukhārī. Thus, what the author has done plainly amounts to attributing to al-Bukhārī something that is not found in his work.
308 — (Abū Dharr reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: “Take heed: you are no better than any red or black person unless you surpass him in fear of Allah.” Narrated by Ahmad.) p. 239
Sound. Ahmad narrated it (5/158) by way of Abū Hilāl, from Bakr, from Abū Dharr. Al-Mundhirī said in al-Targhīb (4/33): “Ahmad narrated it, and its transmitters are well-known and trustworthy, except that Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Muzanī did not hear from Abū Dharr.”
I say: Its chain is therefore disconnected. Abū Hilāl’s name was Muhammad ibn Sulaym al-Rāsibī; he was generally truthful, though there was some weakness in him. Thus, the chain is weak. It is, however, supported and strengthened by the hadith of Abū Saʿīd—
