Weak. Its chain contains Khālid ibn Ubayd al-Maāfirī, whom no one besides Ibn Hibbān deemed trustworthy, and no one narrated from him except Haywa ibn Shurayh. He is therefore unknown. I provided full references for the hadith in Silsilat al-Ahādīth al-Daīfa (Series of Weak Hadiths), no. 1266.
296 – (Imrān ibn Husayn reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a ring on a man’s upper arm which—I believe he said—was made of brass. He asked, “Woe to you! What is this?” The man replied, “It is for an ailment in my arm.” He said, “It will only make you weaker. Cast it away, for if you were to die while wearing it, you would never prosper.” Recorded by Ahmad and Ibn Hibbān in his Sahīh, and by Ibn Mājah without the words, “Cast it away,” and so forth.) p. 233
Weak. Its chain has two defects, which I explained in al-Ahādīth al-Daīfa (Weak Hadiths), no. 1029. Moreover, Ibn Hibbān’s version does not contain the words, “For if you were to die…”—contrary to the impression given by the compiler’s presentation, following al-Mundhirī (4/157). Rather, one of his narrations reads: “If you die while wearing it, you will be left dependent upon it.”
297 – (Īsā ibn Hamza said: “I entered upon Abd Allāh ibn Hakīm while he was suffering from a red swelling. I asked, ‘Why do you not wear an amulet?’ He replied, ‘We seek refuge in Allah from that.’ Another narration reads: ‘Death is nearer than that.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Whoever attaches himself to something will be left dependent upon it.’”) p. 234
Good. Al-Tirmidhī (2/8), al-Hākim (4/216), and Ahmad (4/301, 311) recorded it through Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Laylā, from his brother Īsā, who said: “I entered…”
Al-Tirmidhī said: “The hadith of Abd Allāh ibn Ukaym is known to us only through Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Laylā, and Abd Allāh ibn Ukaym did not hear from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him),
