289—(The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “He is not one of us who takes omens or has omens taken for him, practices soothsaying or has it practiced for him, or practices sorcery or has it practiced for him.” Al-Bazzār, with a good chain.) p. 231
I say: This is what al-Mundhirī said in al-Targhīb (4/52), where he cited it as a hadith of Imrān ibn Husayn. Al-Haythamī said in Majma al-Zawāid (5/117): “Al-Bazzār narrated it, and all its narrators are among those of the Sahīh, except Ishāq ibn al-Rabī, who is trustworthy.”
I say: Al-Dūlābī narrated it through him in al-Kunā (2/166), with a chain whose narrators are trustworthy, from Abū Hamza al-Attār, Ishāq ibn al-Rabī, who said: “Imrān ibn Husayn narrated to us,” omitting the words “or practices sorcery or has it practiced for him.” This is how it appears in the printed edition: “Imrān narrated to us...” That edition contains many errors, and I believe there is an omission here. This is because Ishāq belonged to the generation following the Successors and transmitted from those who narrated from Imrān ibn Husayn, such as al-Hasan al-Basrī and Muhammad ibn Sīrīn. I therefore also believe that one of these two names is what was omitted. If so, al-Mundhirī’s grading of its chain as good is questionable, because neither Ibn Sīrīn nor al-Hasan heard from Imrān. Allah knows best.
Nevertheless, the hadith rises to the grade of good on the strength of a similar hadith from Ibn Abbās traced back to the Prophet.
Al-Mundhirī said: “Al-Tabarānī narrated it with a good chain.” That is what he said, but this too is questionable, for al-Haythamī said: “Al-Bazzār and al-Tabarānī narrated it in al-Awsat, and its chain contains Zama ibn Sālih, who is weak.”
290—(Ibn Masūd says: “Whoever consults a diviner, sorcerer, or soothsayer, questions him, and then believes what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.” Al-Bazzār and Abū Yalā, with a good chain.) p. 232
I say: This is what al-Mundhirī said (4/53). Al-Haythamī said (5/118): “Al-Bazzār narrated it, and all its narrators are among those of the Sahīh, except Hubayra ibn Maryam, who is trustworthy.” He also cited it from him as a statement of Ibn Masūd, with the wording: “Whoever consults a soothsayer or diviner and is convinced of what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad
