(Note) The wording of Abū Mūsā’s hadith in al-Majmaʿ is:
“Do not divorce women unless there are grounds for suspicion. Indeed, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, does not love...”
This is also how it appears in al-Muʿjam al-Awsat. Al-Suyūtī likewise included it in al-Jāmiʿ al-Saghīr, attributing it to al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr. Yet he also included it there, likewise attributing it to that work, with the wording:
“Marry and do not divorce, for Allah does not love...”
It occurred to me that the hadith might appear in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr with both wordings. However, al-Sakhāwī’s earlier statement concerning the preceding hadith was: “Al-Tabarānī narrated it from Abū Mūsā with the same wording, traced back to the Prophet. Al-Daylamī alone narrated it from Abū Hurayra with the wording: ‘Marry and do not divorce...’” This is virtually explicit that this wording is neither found in al-Tabarānī nor part of Abū Mūsā’s hadith. Consider this carefully.
257—(It is reported in the Sahīh that Abdullāh ibn Umar divorced his wife while she was menstruating during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Umar ibn al-Khattāb asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, and he told him: “Command him to take her back. Then, if he wishes, let him divorce her while she is ritually pure, before having intercourse with her. That is divorce in accordance with the prescribed waiting period, as Allah Most High commanded in His words: [‘O Prophet, when you divorce women, divorce them at the commencement of their waiting period’]—meaning at a time when they can begin their waiting period, which is while they are ritually pure.
In another narration: ‘Command him to take her back, then let him divorce her while she is ritually pure or pregnant.’) p. 207
Authentic. It has many wordings and chains—more than ten—which I have documented in al-Irwāʾ (2058), where I also mentioned some of their benefits.
258—(Abū Dāwūd narrated with an authentic chain that Ibn Umar was asked:
