Muhammad ibn Shayba ibn Nuāma narrated to us, from Abd Allah ibn Īsā, from someone who narrated to him, from Abū Mūsā al-Asharī. This chain is therefore disconnected. Qāsim ibn Asbagh also narrated it: Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Awwām narrated to us: my father narrated to us: Hafs ibn Umar al-Burjī narrated to us, from Abd Allah ibn Īsā ibn Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Laylā, from Umāra ibn Rāshid, from Ubāda ibn Nusay, from Abū Mūsā. The latter chain is also disconnected, and Umāra is unknown.” Al-Dhahabī quoted this in al-Radd ala Ibn al-Qattān (fols. 19–20), concurred with it, and said: “Ubāda did not live long enough to meet Abū Mūsā.”
Thus, the defect in the chain is its disconnection. As for Ibn al-Qattān’s statement that Umāra “is unknown,” he followed Abū Hātim in this regard. His son reported from him (1/365) that he said of Umāra: “Unknown.” Al-Dhahabī agreed with him in al-Duafā. He later took issue with this in al-Mīzān, saying: “I say: A number of narrators reported from him, and he appears to be truthful.” Al-Hāfiz endorsed this in al-Lisān and said: “Ibn Hibbān included him in al-Thiqāt. Abū Mūsā al-Madanī listed him in al-Sahāba, attributing this to Jafar al-Mustaghfirī, but then said: ‘He was a Successor; neither his status as a Companion nor his having seen the Prophet is established.’”
Al-Haythamī cited the hadith in al-Majma (4/335) and said:
“Al-Bazzār and al-Tabarānī narrated it in al-Kabīr and al-Awsat. One of al-Bazzār’s chains contains Imrān al-Qattān, whom Ahmad and Ibn Hibbān declared trustworthy, while Yahyā ibn Saīd and others declared him weak.”
After this, al-Munāwī said in al-Fayd:
“Al-Bazzār also narrated it. Abd al-Haqq said: ‘This hadith has no strong chain of transmission.’ Ibn al-Qattān said: ‘He spoke the truth; indeed, in addition to that, its chain is disconnected.’”
As for the hadith of Abū Hurayra, its wording and chain of transmission were given previously under the preceding hadith.
As for the hadith of Ubāda ibn al-Sāmit, al-Haythamī cited it using the wording found in this book and said: “Al-Tabarānī narrated it. Its chain contains an unnamed narrator, while the remainder of the chain is acceptable.”
This may be what the author relied upon when he said, “... through an acceptable chain of transmission,” for I have not—
