in Ibn Mājah’s version. Thus, Ibn Hibbān’s inclusion of the hadith in his Sahīh contradicts this statement of his, which calls its authenticity into question. Allah knows best.
However, the hadith has a corroborating report from Abū Umāma, likewise traced back to the Prophet, except that it reads, “the runaway slave,” in place of, “two brothers who are estranged.” Al-Tirmidhī narrated it (2/193) with a good chain of transmission.
249 – (He, peace be upon him, said to a servant in his household who had angered him while carrying out a task: “Were it not for retribution on the Day of Resurrection, I would have hurt you with this tooth-stick.”) p. 198
Weak. Ibn Saʿd narrated it in al-Tabaqāt al-Kubrā (1/382), from Dāwūd ibn Abī ʿAbd Allāh, from Ibn Judʿān, from his grandmother, from Umm Salama: the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent a young maidservant of his on an errand, but she was slow to return, whereupon he said the words quoted above. This chain of transmission is weak. The status of this Dāwūd is unknown; no one other than Ibn Hibbān declared him trustworthy. Ibn Judʿān is ʿAlī ibn Zayd, and he is weak. I could not identify his grandmother.
Al-Mundhirī also cited the hadith in al-Targhīb (3/164), from Umm Salama, in a similar but fuller version. He said:
“Ahmad narrated it through several chains of transmission, one of which is good, and al-Tabarānī narrated something similar.”
I say: I did not find it in the section containing Umm Salama’s narrations in Ahmad’s Musnad. Allah knows best.
250 – (The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, also said: “One of you beats his wife as a slave is beaten…” Ahmad; al-Bukhārī narrated something similar.) p. 198
Authentic. Ahmad (4/17), al-Bukhārī (3/375, 447–448), Muslim (8/154–155), al-Tirmidhī (2/237), al-Dārimī (2/147), and Ibn Mājah (1983) narrated it from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zamʿa, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
