Authentic. It was narrated by al-Bukhārī (1/222, 223), Muslim (2/32), and Ahmad (2/7, 9, 57, 140, 143, 156), through Sālim ibn ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar, from his father. It occurs in the first passage with different wording: “If your wives seek your permission at night to go to the mosque, grant them permission.” The wording narrated by Muslim and Ahmad is: “If the wife of one of you seeks his permission to go to the mosque, he must not prevent her.” In another narration of theirs, the following is added: “Bilāl ibn ‘Abdullāh said, ‘By Allah, we shall certainly prevent them!’ ‘Abdullāh then turned to him and rebuked him so harshly that I had never heard him rebuke anyone in such a manner. He said, ‘I am informing you from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and you say, “By Allah, we shall certainly prevent them”?!’”
