194 – (‘Ā’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “No woman removes her clothes anywhere other than her husband’s home without tearing the veil between herself and her Lord.”
It was narrated by al-Tirmidhī—whose wording this is—and he said: “A sound hadith”; and by Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, and al-Hākim, who said: “Authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.” Al-Targhīb.) p. 159
Authentic. Its sources are documented in Ādāb al-Zafāf (p. 64).
195 – (Umm Salamah reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Any woman who removes her clothes outside her home, Allah will tear away His covering from her.”
It was narrated by Ahmad, Abū Ya‘lā, al-Tabarānī, and al-Hākim. Al-Targhīb.) p. 159
Authentic by virtue of the preceding report. It was transmitted by Ahmad (6/301) and al-Hākim (4/289), through Darrāj Abū al-Samh, from al-Sā’ib, the client of Umm Salamah: Some women from Homs visited Umm Salamah, and she asked them, “Where are you from?” They replied, “From Homs.” She then said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say”—and she related the report.
Al-Hākim and al-Dhahabī offered no comment on it. Darrāj has some weakness. As for this al-Sā’ib, Ibn Abī Hātim included him in his book (2/1/243) through this route but mentioned neither criticism nor accreditation of him. Ibn Hibbān likewise included him in al-Thiqāt (1/76) and stated that his father’s name was ‘Abd Allāh. Al-Haythamī said regarding the hadith in al-Majma‘ (1/277): “It was narrated by Ahmad, al-Tabarānī in al-Kabīr, and Abū Ya‘lā; its chain contains Ibn Lahī‘ah, who is weak.”
I say: ‘Amr ibn al-Hārith corroborated him in al-Hākim’s narration, so the defect is what we have already mentioned. Ibn Lahī‘ah also has another chain of transmission. He said: Zabbān narrated to us, from Sahl, from his father, that he heard Umm al-Dardā’ say: “I came out of the bathhouse, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, met me and asked, ‘Where have you come from, O Umm al-Dardā’?’”
