(3749), and Ahmad also (6/179), through Abū ‘Udhrah, from ‘Ā’ishah. Al-Tirmidhī said: “Its chain of transmission is not sound.” I say: This is because Abū ‘Udhrah is unknown. Ibn al-Madīnī said that he was unidentified, as stated in al-Mīzān. Al-Hāfiz said in al-Taqrīb: “Unidentified; whoever claimed that he was a Companion was mistaken.” Al-Mundhirī (1/89) also cited Abū Bakr ibn Hāzim as saying: “This hadith is known only through this route, and Abū ‘Udhrah is not well known.” He then cited al-Tirmidhī’s aforementioned statement declaring its chain weak.
192 – (‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said regarding bathhouses: “Men must not enter them without a waist wrapper, and bar women from them, except a woman who is ill or experiencing postnatal bleeding.” It was narrated by Ibn Mājah and Abū Dāwūd. Its chain of transmission contains ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Ziyād ibn An‘um al-Ifrīqī.) p. 158
Weak. It was transmitted by Abū Dāwūd (4011) and Ibn Mājah (3748), through ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Ziyād ibn An‘um, from ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Rāfi‘, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Amr, with this wording.
I say: This chain of transmission is weak. Ibn Rāfi‘ was al-Tanūkhī, the Egyptian who served as judge in Ifrīqiyah. He was weak, as stated in al-Taqrīb. The same applies to the narrator reporting from him, Ibn An‘um—with an a-vowel on the first letter, no vowel on the n, and a u-vowel on the undotted consonant—al-Ifrīqī, who served as judge in Ifrīqiyah. Al-Hāfiz said: “His retention was weak.”
193 – (Ibn ‘Abbās reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Beware of a place called the bathhouse.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, it removes grime and benefits the sick.” He said: “Then whoever enters it must cover himself.” It was narrated by al-Hākim, who said: “It is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.” Al-Mundhirī offered no comment on it in al-Targhīb.) p. 159
Authentic. Its sources are documented in our notes on al-Kalim al-Tayyib (p. 128).
