189 – (The hadith states: “A man’s paternal uncle is like his father.”) p. 155
Authentic. This is part of a hadith narrated by Abū Hurayrah and transmitted by Muslim and others. I cited its full wording and documented its sources in al-Irwā’ (858).
190 – (Jābir, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day must not enter a bathhouse except while wearing a waist wrapper; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day must not allow his wife to enter a bathhouse.” Al-Mundhirī said: “It was narrated by al-Nasā’ī and al-Tirmidhī, who graded it sound, and by al-Hākim, who said: ‘It is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.’” [al-Targhīb]) p. 158
Sound. It was transmitted by al-Nasā’ī (1/70), al-Hākim (4/288), and Ahmad (3/339), through Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir. Al-Hākim said: “It is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.” Al-Dhahabī concurred with him! Yet Abū al-Zubayr was known for concealing his immediate source and narrated it using the ambiguous formula “from.” He was, however, corroborated by Tāwūs. Al-Tirmidhī (2/131) transmitted it through Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, from Tāwūs, with the same wording. He said: “This is a sound, singular hadith. We know it as a hadith of Tāwūs from Jābir only through this route. Muhammad ibn Ismā‘īl—that is, al-Bukhārī—said: ‘Layth ibn Abī Sulaym was truthful, though he would sometimes err in a matter.’”
191 – (Ā’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, reported: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prohibited entering bathhouses, but later permitted men to enter them while wearing waist wrappers.”
It was narrated by Abū Dāwūd, who did not grade it weak—and this is his wording—as well as by al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Mājah. Its chain of transmission contains a narrator who is not well known [al-Targhīb].) p. 158
Weak. It was transmitted by Abū Dāwūd (4009), al-Tirmidhī (2/131), and Ibn Mājah
