Weak. It is documented in al-Ahādīth al-Daīfah under no. 1154.
177 – (Abd al-Rahmān ibn Samurah reported: The Messenger of Allah said to me, “O Abd al-Rahmān, do not seek authority. If it is given to you without your asking for it, you will be helped in carrying it out; but if it is given to you because you asked for it, you will be left to it.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī and Muslim.) p. 140
Authentic. It is documented in al-Irwā.
178 – (He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “A servant will not attain the rank of the God-fearing until he gives up what is harmless out of caution against what is harmful.” Al-Tirmidhī.) p. 141
Weak. It was transmitted by al-Tirmidhī (2/74), as well as Ibn Mājah (4215), al-Hākim (4/319), Abd ibn Humayd in al-Muntakhab min al-Musnad (fol. 58/1), al-Bayhaqī in al-Sunan (5/335), al-Qudāī in Musnad al-Shihāb (fol. 76/2), and Ibn Asākir in Tārīkh Dimashq (11/342/1), by way of Abū Uqayl al-Thaqafī, Abd Allah ibn Uqayl: Abd Allah ibn Yazīd narrated to us: Rabīah ibn Yazīd and Atiyyah ibn Qays narrated to me, from Atiyyah al-Sadī—who was one of the Prophet’s Companions—who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he cited the hadith. Al-Tirmidhī said, “It is a sound, singular hadith; we know it only through this route.” Al-Hākim said, “Its chain of transmission is authentic”! Al-Dhahabī concurred with him! This is astonishing, especially coming from him, for no one declared Abd Allah ibn Yazīd—namely, the Damascene—to be trustworthy. Rather, al-Jawzajānī said, “Ibn Uqayl narrated objectionable hadiths from him.” This is quoted in Ibn Adī’s al-Kāmil (fol. 223/2), citing Ibn Hammād, namely al-Dūlābī. Al-Dhahabī himself included him in al-Duafā and mentioned this statement of al-Jawzajānī. The hadith master said in al-Taqrīb: “Weak.”
179 – (He, peace be upon him, said: “Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt.”
