She answered, “We used to set out his siwak (toothstick) and the water for his ablution. Then Allah would awaken him at whatever hour of the night He willed. He would brush his teeth with the siwak, perform ablution, and pray nine rakʿahs, not sitting at all until the eighth. There he would remember Allah, praise Him, invoke blessings upon His Prophet ﷺ, and make supplication. He would then rise without giving salām, stand to perform the ninth rakʿah, sit again, remember Allah, praise Him, invoke blessings upon His Prophet ﷺ, and supplicate, after which he would pronounce a salām loud enough for us to hear. He would next pray two rakʿahs while seated—making eleven in all, my son.
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became advanced in years and put on some flesh, he performed witr with seven and handled the two seated rakʿahs just as he had done before; thus they were nine in total, my son.” ⦗106⦘
