to a single rakʿah for the witr prayer, and this was the consistent practice of the early generations, may Allah be pleased with them. Al-Hafiz said in his Sharh al-Bukhari: “It has been soundly transmitted from a number of the Companions that they performed witr with one rakʿah, without any voluntary units before it. In the book of Muhammad ibn Nasr and others, with an authentic chain, it is narrated from al-Saʾib ibn Yazid that ʿUthman recited the entire Qur’an in one night in a single rakʿah and offered nothing else. In the ‘Maghazi’ section the hadith of ʿAbd Allah ibn Thalabah will appear, stating that Saʿd performed witr with one rakʿah; and in the ‘Manaqib’ section it will be mentioned that Muʿawiya performed witr with a single rakʿah, and that Ibn ʿAbbas deemed it sound.” ⦗98⦘
