Al-Jūrī—one of our colleagues—reports that Mālik said, “What ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb brought the people together upon is dearer to me: eleven rakʿahs, and that is the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.” He was asked, “Eleven rakʿahs including the witr?” He replied, “Yes, and thirteen is close to it.” He then remarked, “I do not know where this excessive number of rakʿahs has come from.” ⦗91⦘
