Salat al-TarawihNasir al-Din al-Albani

The second chain runs through Ḥammād ibn Shuʿayb, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī, from ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him). He said that ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) summoned the Qur’an-reciters in Ramadan and appointed one of them to lead the people in twenty rakʿahs, while ʿAlī himself would perform the witr with them.

Al-Bayhaqī recorded it (2/496), but its chain of transmission is weak for two reasons:

  1. ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib—he became confused in his later years.
  2. Ḥammād ibn Shuʿayb—he is extremely weak. Al-Bukhārī alluded to this by saying, “There is a problem with him,” and elsewhere, “His ḥadith is munkar.” The scholars have noted that such expressions apply to a narrator from whom transmission is not permissible, so he cannot be used even for corroboration and his report is unfit for consideration.

I add: Muḥammad ibn Faḍīl disagreed with him; Ibn Abī Shaybah narrated it from him, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, in an abridged wording: “from ʿAlī, that he led them in Ramadan.” ⦗77⦘
