of having broken away from the Muslim community; yet, lo and behold, today they themselves issue rulings in accordance with the very view for which only yesterday they were branding others unbelievers. This happens because they do not truly know how to return to the Sunnah and live by it, even though that is the religious obligation. They fall back on it only when compelled by unfolding events, repeated experience, and calculations of public interest. Perhaps, then, they will at last embrace a genuine return to the Sunnah and act upon it—since that alone is legally binding—instead of appealing to it only under the pressure of circumstances. And perhaps they will adopt his ﷺ Sunnah concerning the tarawih prayer, in submission to the Qur’anic proof, for Allah—majestic is He—says of His Prophet ﷺ and his Sunnah:
“But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you the judge in all disputes between them, then find in their hearts no discomfort over what you have decided, and submit with full submission.”
He also says:
“Indeed, there has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book by which Allah guides those who seek His pleasure to the paths of peace; He brings them out of darkness into light by His permission and guides them to a straight path.” ⦗74⦘
