—not from caprice nor out of blind adherence to forefathers—there is no blame upon him, all the more so because some eminent scholars themselves did not adopt it in this very matter. Success comes only from Allah, exalted is He.
The safer course is to follow the Sunnah:
Whatever may be said about the permissibility of increasing the number or not, I cannot imagine that any Muslim—after all that has been clarified—would hesitate to affirm that the number transmitted from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is better than adding to it, for he ﷺ explicitly said:
“The best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad.”
(Authentic; narrated by Muslim.)
What, then, prevents Muslims today from embracing this Prophetic guidance and leaving aside whatever exceeds it? What indeed holds them back from taking up this guidance and abandoning the surplus—if only on the basis of the principle, “Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt”? This becomes all the more pressing when we recall that many people perform twenty rakaʿahs of Tarāwīḥ with such excessive speed that one might say the prayer is invalid altogether, for they fail to observe ṭumaʾnīnah (tranquil composure), a pillar of the prayer without which it is not valid, as will be explained in chapter eight. ⦗46⦘
