figurative interpretation (taʾwīl) of these reports and verses, yet they still acknowledge that the way (madhhab) of the Salaf in this matter is exactly as we have described. I have also come across a passage in the book of one of their own teachers in which he writes: “Our companions have differed concerning the narrations on the divine attributes. Some leave them as they are, without explanation or figurative interpretation, while rejecting any anthropomorphic comparison (tashbīh)—and that is the way of the Salaf.” Thus consensus has been established regarding the soundness of what we have set forth, and all praise is due to Allah.
