I would strike him with the sword out of protective jealousy.” Word of this reached the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said:

“Are you surprised at Saʿd’s protective jealousy? By Allah, my protective jealousy is greater than his, and Allah’s is greater than mine. Because of His protective jealousy, He has forbidden shameful deeds, both open and hidden. No being has greater protective jealousy than Allah, Mighty and Majestic. No being loves excuses more than Allah, Mighty and Majestic; for that reason He sent the messengers to bring glad tidings and give warning. No being loves praise more than Allah, Mighty and Majestic.”

(10) Chapter: An Exposition Affirming a Self for Allah, Mighty and Majestic

10 - Imam Abū Zakariyyā Yahyā ibn ʿAmmār ibn Yahyā informed us—may he be granted mercy by

لَضَرَبْتُهُ بِالسَّيْفِ غَيْرَةً مِنِّي فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَتَعْجَبُونَ مِنْ غيرَة سعد فو الله لَأَنَا أَغْيَرُ مِنْهُ وَاللَّهُ أَغْيَرُ مِنِّي وَمِنْ أَجْلِ غَيْرَتِهِ حَرَّمَ الْفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ وَلَا شَخْصَ أَغْيَرُ مِنَ اللَّهِ ﷿ وَلَا شَخْصَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْهِ الْعُذْرُ مِنَ اللَّهِ ﷿ وَمِنْ أَجْلِ ذَلِكَ بَعَثَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ مُبَشِّرِينَ وَمُنْذِرِينَ وَلَا شَخْصَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْهِ الْمِدْحَةُ مِنَ اللَّهِ ﷿ - (١٠) بَابُ بَيَانِ إِثْبَاتِ النَّفْسِ لِلَّهِ ﷿ ١٠ - أخبرنَا أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا يحي بن عمار بن يحي الْإِمَامُ رَحِمَهُ
