The Report of Muʿādh
He also said, “Whoever does not deny any part of Allah’s Book is a believer.”
Abu Ḥanīfah related: “Some scholars informed me that when Muʿādh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived in the city of Ḥimṣ, the people gathered around him. A young man asked, ‘What is your verdict concerning a person who prays, fasts, performs pilgrimage to the Sacred House, fights in the path of Allah Most High, emancipates slaves, and pays his zakat, yet harbors doubt concerning Allah and His Messenger?’ He replied, ‘Such a one is destined for the Fire.’
“The youth then asked, ‘What do you say about a person who does not pray, does not fast, does not perform pilgrimage to the House, and does not pay his zakat, yet he believes in Allah and His Messenger?’ Muʿādh answered, ‘I have hope for him, yet I also fear for him.’
“Thereupon the young man said, ‘O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, just as it does not benefit…’”
