Muʿādh then said, “What is making you weep, O Ḥārith?”
He answered, “It is not your impending death that makes me weep—for I know that the Hereafter is better for you than this world—but rather, who will be the teacher after you?” (In another report: “but who will safeguard knowledge after you?”)
Muʿādh said, “Take it easy, and hold fast to ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd.”
Ḥārith asked, “Advise me.” So Muʿādh counselled him with whatever Allah willed and then concluded, “Beware the slip of the scholar.”

After Muʿādh passed away, Ḥārith travelled to Kūfa and joined the companions of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd. When the call to prayer was announced, Ḥārith said, “Rise to this summons; it is the right of every believer who hears it to respond.” They looked at him and said, “You are certainly a believer.”
He replied, “Yes, I am indeed a believer.”
They began winking at one another about him. When ʿAbd Allāh (Ibn Masʿūd) came out, they told him what had occurred, and he said the same words to Ḥārith. Ḥārith lowered his head, wept, and said, “May Allah have mercy on Muʿādh.”
When Ibn Masʿūd was informed of this, he said to him, “You are certainly a believer.”
Ḥārith replied, “Yes.”
He asked, “Do you also claim that you are among the people of Paradise?”
Ḥārith said, “May Allah have mercy on Muʿādh, for he instructed me to beware the slip of the scholar and the ruling of the hypocrite.”
