Al-Fiqh al-AkbarAbu Hanifa

His Discourse on Istitaʿah (Human Capability)

Abu Hanifah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The very ability by which a servant commits an act of disobedience is, in itself, fit for him to employ in obedience as well. He is therefore held blameworthy for diverting the capacity that Allah Most High has newly created within him—and has commanded him to use in obedience rather than in sin—toward disobedience.”

I then said, “If someone claims, ‘Allah, exalted is He, does not compel His servants to commit a sin and then punish them for it,’ how are we to respond to him?”
