Al-Fiqh al-AkbarAbu Hanifa

We do not declare a Muslim to be an unbeliever because of any sin so long as he does not regard that sin as lawful.

The Companions were devout worshippers, steadfast upon the truth and aligned with it; we profess loyalty to them all. We mention none of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah except with praise. Likewise, we do not excommunicate a Muslim for any sin—even a grave one—provided he does not deem it permissible. We do not strip him of the name of faith; rather, we call him a true believer. He may be a sinful believer, but he is not an unbeliever.
