I asked, “Does Allah punish His servants for what He is pleased with, or for what He is not pleased with?”
He replied, “Allah punishes them for what He is not pleased with, for He punishes them for kufr (disbelief) and maʿāṣī (acts of disobedience), and He is not pleased with either of them.
I then said, “So does He punish them for what He wills for them, or for what He does not will?”
He answered, “Rather, He punishes them for what He wills for them; He punishes them for kufr (disbelief) and sins, and He has willed kufr for the unbeliever and sin for the sinner.”
I asked, “Did He command them to embrace Islam and then will kufr for them?”
He said, “Yes.”
I continued, “Did His will precede His command, or did His command precede His will?”
He replied, “His will preceded His command.”
I asked, “Does Allah’s willing something mean that He is pleased with it, or not?”
He responded, “Allah is pleased with the one who acts in accordance with His will, His pleasure, and obedience to Him in what He has commanded. But whoever acts contrary to what He has commanded has indeed acted by His will yet not by His pleasure—rather, he has acted in disobedience, and disobedience is not His pleasure.”
I asked once more, “Does Allah punish the servants for what He is pleased with?”
He said, “He punishes them for what He is not pleased with.”
