Kitāb al-Fiqh al-AbsaṭAbu Hanifa

Chapter: The Obligation to Adhere to the Qur’an

Maymūn narrated to us from Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with them both—that a man came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, “O Messenger of Allah, teach me.” He replied,

“Go and learn the Qur’an,”—and he repeated this three times. Then, on the fourth occasion, he said to him, “Accept the truth from whoever brings it to you, whether he is dear to you or disliked; learn the Qur’an, and follow it wherever it leads.”

Ḥammād also narrated to us from Ibrāhīm that Ibn Masʿūd—may Allah be pleased with him—used to say, “The worst of matters are those that are newly introduced; every novelty is a bidʿa, every bidʿa is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.”

Allah, Exalted is He, says:
“So He inspired it with its wickedness and its righteousness.” ⦗91⦘

And Allah, Exalted is He, said to Moses—our master and Prophet, upon him be peace:
“Indeed, We have tested your people after you, and the Sāmirī has led them astray.” ⦗20:85⦘
