His Discourse on Human Capacity
Abu Hanifah—may Allah have mercy on him—said: The very capacity by which a servant commits a sin is the same capacity by which he can perform an act of obedience. He is therefore liable to punishment for diverting the capacity that Allah Most High has brought into being within him—and has commanded him to employ in obedience—toward disobedience instead.
I then asked: If someone objects, saying, “Allah, exalted is He, does not compel His servants to commit a sin and then punish them for it,” what should we reply?
كَلَامه عَن الِاسْتِطَاعَة
