55 – Ishāq ibn Ismāīl narrated to me: Jarīr narrated to me, from Layth, from Abū al-Āliya, who said:
The Companions of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, gathered around me and said, “O Abū al-Āliya, do not perform any deed seeking thereby anyone other than Allah, lest Allah leave your reward to the one whom you sought. O Abū al-Āliya, do not rely upon anyone other than Allah, lest Allah leave you to the one upon whom you relied.”
56 – Abd al-Rahmān ibn Wāqid narrated to us: Damra narrated to us, from Rajā ibn Abī Salama, from Abd Allah ibn Abī Nuaym, from Ibn Muhayrīz:
Umar ibn al-Khattāb was invited to a feast. After he had eaten and departed, he said, “I wish I had not attended this meal.”
He was asked, “Why, O Commander of the Faithful?”
He replied, “I believe your host prepared it only to show off.”
