Al-Ikhlas wa-l-NiyyaIbn Abi al-Dunya

52 – Āsim ibn Āmir ibn Alī narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to us, from Abd Rabbihi ibn Abī Hilāl, from Maymūn ibn Mihrān, who said:

One day, Umar ibn Abd al-Azīz spoke in the presence of a group of his brethren, delivering eloquent words and a fine admonition. He then noticed one of those seated with him brushing away a tear, so he stopped speaking. I said to him, “O Commander of the Faithful, continue speaking, for I hope that Allah will bestow His grace upon whoever hears your words or to whom they are conveyed.”

He replied, “Leave me be. There is temptation in speech, and deeds are more becoming of a believer than words.”

[52] Āsim ibn Āmir ibn Alī: this is how the name appears in the original, but the correct reading is “Umar” rather than “Āmir.” Ibn Maīn described him as truthful; another report from him states that he was acceptable. Ibn Hibbān included him in *al-Thiqāt*. *Al-Jarh wa al-Tadīl*, 6/243; *Ta'jīl al-Manfa'a*, p. 204. Umar ibn Alī ibn Atā ibn Muqaddam, Āsim’s father, was trustworthy but engaged extensively in *tadlīs* (concealing an intermediary in a chain of transmission). He died in 190 AH, or sometime thereafter. *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 416. I could find no biographical entry for Abd Rabbih ibn Abī Hilāl. Maimūn ibn Mihrān al-Jazarī, Abū Ayyūb, was originally from Kufa and settled in al-Raqqa. He served as governor of al-Jazīra under Umar ibn Abd al-Azīz and died in 117 AH. *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 10/390; *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 556.
