42 – Yaqub ibn Ismāīl narrated to me, saying: Hibbān ibn Mūsā narrated to us: Abdullah ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us, saying: A man informed me, from Abū al-Salīl, that whenever he was narrating or reciting and felt tears coming on, he would turn them into laughter.
43 – Yaqub narrated to me: Hibbān reported to us: Abdullah reported to us: al-Mu‘tamir reported to us, from Kahmas ibn al-Hasan, from one of his companions, that a man sighed in Umar’s presence as though making a show of sorrow, so Umar jabbed him—or, he said, punched him.
44 – Muhammad ibn Alī ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, from Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ash‘ath, who said: I heard Abū Isām al-Ramlī narrate from a man, from al-Hasan, that one day al-Hasan was speaking or exhorting when a man in his gathering sighed. Al-Hasan said, “If it was for Allah, you have drawn attention to yourself; and if it was for anyone other than Allah, you are ruined.”
