40 – Khālid ibn Khidāsh and Ubayd Allah ibn Umar narrated to us, saying: Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Yūnus ibn Ubayd, from al-Hasan, who said:
“A group might gather around a man—or they might gather together—to discuss matters. His eyes would well with tears, but he would hold them back. They would well again, and he would hold them back; then they would well yet again, and he would hold them back (1). When he feared that his tears would escape him, he would rise and leave.”
41 – Khālid ibn Khidāsh narrated to us: Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, saying:
“Ayyūb once wept, and his sobbing gave him away (2). He said, ‘This cold (3) comes over me from time to time.’
“On another occasion he wept, and we could tell that he was crying (4). He said, ‘When an elderly man advances in years, he drools (5).’”
