32 – Abd al-Rahmān ibn Sālih narrated to us: Abū Bakr ibn Ayyāsh narrated to us, from Āsim, who said:
Whenever Abū Wāʾil was alone, he would weep. I heard him say while prostrating, “My Lord, have mercy on me. My Lord, forgive me. My Lord, if You pardon me, it is purely out of generosity(1) from You; and if You punish me, You do so without injustice, and none can thwart You.” Then he would sob as intensely as a bereaved mother. Even if the whole world were offered to him in return for weeping where anyone could see him, he would not do so.
[32] Abū Bakr ibn Ayyāsh ibn Sālim al-Asadī, the Kufan Quran reciter and grain merchant, was trustworthy and devout. However, his memory deteriorated in old age, though his written records remained sound. He died in 194 AH, or, according to another view, one or two years earlier, having nearly reached the age of one hundred. *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 624.
Āsim was Āsim ibn Bahdala, also known as Ibn Abī al-Najūd, a Kufan and one of the seven canonical Quran reciters. He was generally reliable, though he made occasional errors, and was an authority in Quran recitation. *Tahdhīb al-Kamāl*, 13/473; *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 285.
Abū Wāil was Shaqīq ibn Salama al-Asadī. He lived during the Prophet’s lifetime, peace and blessings be upon him, but did not see him. Āsim ibn Bahdala said of him: “I never heard Abū Wāil insult any person or even an animal.” He died during the caliphate of Umar ibn Abd al-Azīz at the age of one hundred. *Tahdhīb al-Kamāl*, 12/548; *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 268.

٣٢ - حدثنا عبد الرحمن بنُ صالحٍ ، حدثنا أبو بكر بنُ عَيَّاشٍ ، عن عاصم قال :
كان أبو وائل إذا خلا بَكَىٰ ؛ فسمعتُه يقولُ إذا سَجَدَ : رَبِّ ارحَمْنِي ، رَبِّ اغْفُ عنِّي ، ربِّ إِنْ تَعْفُ عنِّي تَعفُ طَوْلًا(١) من قبلك ، وإِنْ تُعَذِّبْنِي تُعَذِّبْنِي غيرَ ظالمٍ ولا مسبوق . قال : ثم يَشِيجُ كأشدِّ نشيج الثَّكْلَى ، ولو جُعِلَتْ له الدنيا على أن يَبْكِيَ ، وأحدٌ يراه ، لم يفعلْ .
[ ٣٢ ] - أبو بكر بن عياش بن سالم الأسدي ، الكوفي المقرىء ، الحناط ، ثقة عابد ، إلّا أنه لما كبر ساء حفظه وكتابه صحيح ، مات سنة ١٩٤ ، وقيل قبل ذلك بسنة أو سنتين ، وقد قارب المئة ؛ « تقريب التهذيب » : ٦٢٤ .
عاصم ، هو ابن بَهْدَلة ، وهو ابنُ أبي النَّجود ، الكوفي ، أحد القُرّاء السبعة ، صدوق ، له أوهام ، حجّة في القراءة ؛ « تهذيب الكمال » ١٣ / ٤٧٣ ، و « تقريب التهذيب » : ٢٨٥ .
أبو وائل ، هو شَقِيق بن سَلَمَة ، الأسدي ، أدرك النبيَّ صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم ولم يَرَه . قال فيه عاصم بن بَهْدَلة : ما سمعتُ أبا وائل سَبَّ إنساناً قطُّ ولا بهيمة . مات في خلافة عمر بن عبد العزيز ، وله مئة سنة ؛ « تهذيب الكمال » ١٢ / ٥٤٨ ، و « تقريب التهذيب » : ٢٦٨ .
