24—Abd al-Rahmān ibn Sālih narrated to me: al-Muhāribī narrated to me, from Sufyān, from Zubayd, who said:
“Whoever’s inward state is better than his outward state possesses true virtue; whoever’s inward state is equal to his outward state possesses equity (1); and whoever’s inward state falls short of his outward state is guilty of injustice (2).”
[24] Abd al-Rahmān ibn Sālih al-Azdī al-Atakī was truthful but inclined toward Shiism. He died in 235 AH; *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 343.
Al-Muhāribī was Abd al-Rahmān ibn Muhammad. He was acceptable but practiced *tadlīs* (concealment in transmission), according to Ahmad; *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 349.
Sufyān was Sufyān ibn Saīd al-Thawrī, the renowned hadith master.
Zubayd was Zubayd ibn al-Hārith al-Yāmī al-Kūfī, a reliable, precise, and devout narrator; see *Hilyat al-Awliyā*, 5/29, and *Tahdhīb al-Kamāl*, 9/289.
(1) That is, justice.
(2) Al-Ghazālī attributed these verses in *al-Ihyā* to Yazīd ibn al-Hārith, as cited in al-Zabīdī’s *Ithāf al-Sāda al-Muttaqīn*, 10/80:
“When a believer is the same in private and public,
He is honored in this world and deserves praise.
But if his public conduct differs from what lies concealed,
His striving earns no merit—only toil and pain.
A pure dinar circulates freely in the marketplace,
But an adulterated coin is rejected and fulfills no desire.”
