and if it is correct but not sincere, it is not accepted until it is both sincere and correct.

It is sincere when it is done for Allah, and correct when it accords with the sunnah (1).

(1) The hadith master Ibn Rajab stated in *Jāmi al-Ulūm wa-l-Hikam*, 1/24: “This meaning expressed by Fudayl is indicated by the words of Allah Almighty: ‘Whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him perform righteous deeds and associate no one in the worship of his Lord’ [al-Kahf 18:110]. Some of those possessed of spiritual insight said, ‘Their ranks differed according to their intentions, not according to their fasting and prayer.’” Idrīs ibn Baydakīn ibn Abd Allah al-Turkumānī al-Hanafī stated in *al-Luma fī al-Hawādith wa-l-Bida*, 1/54: “Scholars discussed the Prophet’s words: ‘Whoever, after every prayer, glorifies Allah thirty-three times, praises Him thirty-three times, and magnifies Him thirty-three times, then completes the hundred by saying, “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner. To Him belong all sovereignty and praise, and He has power over all things. O Allah, none can withhold what You give, none can give what You withhold, and no person’s worldly fortune can avail them against You,” will have his sins erased, even if they are like the foam of the sea.’ They said that a Muslim receives this reward only by doing exactly this, neither adding to it nor subtracting from it. Thus, if he were to glorify Allah one hundred times, praise Him one hundred times, and magnify Him one hundred times, a group of scholars—including al-Murahhal, a master deeply grounded in the Islamic sciences, and Judge al-Izz ibn Abd al-Salām, the foremost of scholars and mufti to the people—held that he would be deprived of this immense reward because of his deficient adherence to the Prophet’s hadith. Allah Almighty does not esteem deeds merely for their abundance; rather, they must conform to the sunnah. The Lord says, ‘That He may test you as to which of you is best in deed,’ not ‘which of you performs the most deeds.’ A good deed is one that conforms to the sunnah.”
