21 — Abd al-Rahīm ibn Bahr narrated to me: Uthmān ibn Umāra narrated to us, from Ismāīl ibn Kathīr al-Sulaymī, who said:
Atā al-Sulaymī was asked, “What is vigilance?”
He replied, “It is to guard one’s deeds lest they be done for other than Allah.”
22 — Muhammad ibn Alī ibn Shaqīq narrated to us: Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ashath narrated to us, from Fudayl ibn Iyād, regarding the verse:
“To test you as to which of you is best in deed” [Hūd 11:7; al-Mulk 67:2].
He commented, “The most sincere and the most correct.” He then said, “If a deed is sincere but not correct, it is not accepted,
[21] Abd al-Rahīm ibn Bahr: I found no biographical entry for him.
Uthmān ibn Umāra is mentioned by al-Dhahabī in *al-Mughnī* (no. 4049) and by Ibn Hajar in *Lisān al-Mīzān*; both cite a fabricated hadith that he transmitted.
Atā al-Sulamī was an ascetic from Basra who lived during the lifetime of Anas ibn Mālik and heard from al-Hasan al-Basrī. See *al-Mughnī* (no. 4135) and *Lisān al-Mīzān*, 4/200.
[22] Muhammad ibn Alī ibn Shafīq is Muhammad ibn Alī ibn al-Hasan ibn Shafīq, a trustworthy hadith scholar. See *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 9/349, and *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 497.
Regarding Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ashath, Ibn Hajar states in *Lisān al-Mīzān*, 1/23: “He was a servant of Fudayl ibn Iyād. Abū Hātim said, ‘We used to think well of him, but he has related a hadith such as this.’” Ibn Hajar then cites a worthless hadith. Ibn Hibbān included him in *al-Thiqāt*, 8/66, stating: “He was a companion of Fudayl ibn Iyād and narrated heart-softening reports from him. Abd ibn Humayd al-Kashshī narrated from him. He transmits uncommon reports, sometimes alone, and he errs and contradicts others.” In *Tārīkh Naysābūr*, al-Hākim cited an assessment by Alī ibn al-Hasan al-Hilālī affirming his reliability, as quoted in *Lisān al-Mīzān*.
Fudayl ibn Iyād ibn Masūd al-Taymī was a leading ascetic, a trustworthy transmitter, and a renowned worshipper. He died in 187 AH, though an earlier date is also reported. See *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 447.
