19 — Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: I was informed that Ibn Jamīl said: I heard Abda ibn Sulaymān say:
Muhammad ibn Abī Mansūr narrated to us that a worshipper among the Children of Israel worshipped Allah in an underground chamber (1) for forty years. The angels would raise his deeds to heaven, but they were not accepted. The angels said, “By Your might, our Lord, we have raised to You only deeds performed in secret.” He said, “You have spoken the truth, My angels; but he desires his whereabouts to be known.”
[19] Ibn Jamīl was Ahmad Abū Yūsuf al-Marwazī. He settled in Baghdad, where he narrated from Abd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak, Mutamir ibn Sulaymān, and others. Among those who narrated from him were Yaqūb ibn Shayba al-Sadūsī, Abbās al-Dūrī, and Ibn Abī al-Dunyā. He was reliable and truthful and died in Baghdad in 230 AH. See *Tārīkh Baghdād*, 4/76.
Abda ibn Sulaymān al-Marwazī, Abū Muhammad, settled in al-Massīsa. He was truthful and is said to have died in 236 AH. See *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, 1/530; *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 6/459.
(1) *Al-sarab* means a hidden passage. The Quran states: “and it made its way into the sea as through a tunnel.”
١٩ - قال ابنُ أبي الدنيا : بَلَغني عن ابن جميل قال : سمعت عبدةُ بنَ سُليمان
قال :
حدثنا محمد بنُ أبي منصور أنَّ عابداً في بني إسرائيلَ عَبَدَ الله في سَرَبٍ (١)
أربعين سنةً ، فكانتِ الملائكةُ ترفعُ عملَه إلى السَّماء فلا يُقبل ؛ فقالتِ
الملائكة : وعِزَّتِكَ ربَّنا ما رَفعنا إليك إلاَّ خَفاءً . قال : صَدَقْتُم ملائكتي ؛
ولكنّه يُحِبُّ أنْ يُعرَفَ مكانُه .
[ ١٩ ] - ابن جميل : هو أحمد ، أبو يوسف المروزي ، سكن بغداد وحدّث بها عن
عبد الله بن المبارك ومعتمر بن سليمان ، وغيرهم ، وعن يعقوب بن شيبة
السدوسي ، وعباس الدوري ، وابن أبي الدنيا ، ثقة صدوق ، توفي سنة
٢٣٠ ببغداد ؛ « تاريخ بغداد » ٤ / ٧٦ .
عبدة بن سُليمان المَرْوَزي ، أبو محمد ، نزيل المَصّيصة ، صدوق ، يقال إنه
مات سنة ٢٣٦ . « تقريب التهذيب » ١ / ٥٣٠ ، و « تهذيب التهذيب »
٦ / ٤٥٩ .
(١) « السَّرَب » المسلك في خُفية ؛ وفي التنزيل العزيز : ﴿ فاتخذ سبيله في البحر
سَرَبا ﴾ .
