Al-Ikhlas wa-l-NiyyaIbn Abi al-Dunya

11 — Abū Muslim Abd al-Rahmān ibn Yūnus narrated to me: Abū Usāmah narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, who said:

I heard Ibrāhīm say:

“A man may perform a deed that appears good in people’s eyes—or any deed by which he does not seek the Face of Allah—and consequently incur people’s hatred and censure until he becomes blameworthy. Conversely, he may perform a deed or undertake a matter that people dislike, seeking thereby the Face of Allah, and consequently earn their affection (1) and approval (2).”

[11] Abd al-Rahmān ibn Yūnus, Abū Muslim al-Mustamlī al-Baghdādī, a client of al-Mansūr. He was considered truthful, though criticized for his adherence to ra’y (reasoned opinion). He died in 224 AH or later. *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 353. Abū Usāma was Hammād ibn Usāma ibn Zayd al-Qurashī, a trustworthy and reliable transmitter. His biography appears in *Tahdhīb al-Kamāl*, vol. 7, p. 217. Al-A‘mash was Sulaymān ibn Mihrān. He narrated from Ibrāhīm al-Taymī and Ibrāhīm al-Nakha‘ī. He was trustworthy, a master hadith scholar, an expert in Quranic recitation, and scrupulous, though he practiced *tadlīs* (obscuring his immediate source). He died in 147 or 148 AH. *Tahdhīb al-Kamāl*, vol. 12, p. 76; *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 254. Ibrāhīm was Ibrāhīm ibn Yazīd al-Nakha‘ī, Abū Imrān, the Kufan jurist. He died in 196 AH, aged about fifty. *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 95. (1) *Al-miqa* means “love.” In *Hilyat al-Awliyā’*, vol. 4, p. 229, *al-udhr* (“excuse”) appears instead of *al-miqa*. (2) Reported by Abū Nu‘aym in *Hilyat al-Awliyā’*, vol. 4, p. 229.
