9 — Abū Muhammad al-Bazzār narrated to me: al-Musayyab ibn Wādih narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Walīd, who said:
Umar ibn Abd al-Azīz passed by a man who was toying with pebbles in his hand while saying, “O Allah, grant me one of the maidens of Paradise in marriage.” Umar stopped before him and said, “What a wretched suitor you are! Why did you not cast aside the pebbles and supplicate to Allah with sincerity?”
[9] Abū Muhammad al-Bazzār was Khalaf ibn Hishām of Baghdad. Ibn Hibbān said: “He was a virtuous and learned scholar of Quranic recitation.” Ahmad ibn Hanbal recorded hadith from him. He died in Baghdad on Saturday, 7 Jumādā al-Ākhira 229 AH. See *al-Ansāb*, vol. 1, p. 337.
Al-Musayyab ibn Wādih al-Sulamī al-Talmanisī al-Himsī was declared weak by al-Dāraqutnī. Ibn Abī Hātim said: “He was truthful but made many errors.” See *al-Mughnī*, no. 6252; and *Lisān al-Mīzān*, vol. 6, p. 47.
Muhammad ibn al-Walīd was perhaps al-Zubaydī, whose grandfather was Āmir. He was known as Abū al-Hudhayl al-Himsī, a trustworthy judge and one of al-Zuhrī’s foremost students. He died in 146, 147, or 149 AH. See *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 511.
