Al-Ikhlas wa-l-NiyyaIbn Abi al-Dunya

7 — Yaqūb ibn Ismāīl narrated to me: Hibbān ibn Mūsā informed us: Abd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak informed us: Ibn Lahīa informed us: Ibn Ghaziyya narrated to me, from Hamza, one of the descendants of Ibn Masūd, who said:

“Blessed is he who devotes his worship and supplication sincerely to Allah(1), does not allow what his eyes see(2) to distract his heart, does not allow what his ears hear to make him forget the remembrance of Him(3), and does not grieve over what has been given(4) to others(5).”

[7] Ya'qūb ibn Ismā'īl ibn Hammād ibn Zayd al-Basrī, judge of Medina. Abū Hātim said: “He was truthful; I recorded hadith from him in Sāmarrā.” See *al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dīl*, vol. 4, part 2, p. 204; and *Tahdhīb al-Kamāl*, entry on Ibn Abī al-Dunyā. Hibbān ibn Mūsā ibn Sawwār al-Sulamī was trustworthy. He died in 233 AH. See *Tahdhīb al-Kamāl*, vol. 5, p. 344; and *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 150. Abd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak was the renowned imam and hadith master. See *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, vol. 5, p. 283. Ibn Lahī'a was Abd Allāh, Abū Abd al-Rahmān al-Misrī, the judge. He was truthful, but his memory became confused after his books were burned. The narrations transmitted from him by Ibn al-Mubārak and Ibn Wahb are more reliable than those of others. He died in 174 AH at over eighty years of age. See *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 319. Ibn Ghaziyya was Umāra al-Māzinī al-Madanī, an acceptable narrator. See *al-Taqrīb*, vol. 2, p. 51. (1) The additions to *al-Zuhd wa al-Raqā'iq* read: “his supplication and worship of Allah.” (2) The additions to *al-Zuhd wa al-Raqā'iq* read: “for what you see.” (3) The additions to *al-Zuhd wa al-Raqā'iq* read: “the remembrance of Allah.” (4) The additions to *al-Zuhd wa al-Raqā'iq* read: “for what He has given.” (5) It was transmitted by Imam Abd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak, as cited in Nu'aym ibn Hammād’s additions to *al-Zuhd wa al-Raqā'iq*, no. 19.
